Comparative and superlative adjectives

Adjectives are used to describe nouns. When we compare two or more things we use comparatives. Add –er to:

One-syllable adjectives e.g. fast → faster. His car is faster than mine.
Two-syllable adjectives ending in –y e.g. easy → easier. The Maths exam was easier than the English exam.

For adjectives with 2 or more syllables add more.
e.g. beautiful→ more beautiful. I think Angelina is more beautiful than Penelope.

A superlative is used to compare 3 or more things. Add est to:

One-syllable words e.g. fast → the fastest. The cheetah is the fastest animal in the world.
Two-syllable words ending in –y e.g. easy → the easiest. That was the easiest exam I’ve had.

For adjectives with 2 or more syllables add the most
e.g. beautiful → the most beautiful. Angelina is the most beautiful woman in Hollywood.
