Model Answer - Ielts Writing (Task 2)

Some people believe that visitors to other countries should follow local customs and behaviour. Other disagree and think that the host country should welcome cultural differences.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Travelling has become a favourite pastime for many people. Thousands of tourists travel every year, driven by the desire to experience other cultures, way of life, locations, sights, food etc. In their travels, visitors carry their own set of cultural values to the destination of their choice and interact with locals who have different cultures.

Some countries, for example Saudi Arabia, have strict dress codes for women and expect visitors to abide to these. Following a country’s customs and behaviour is a sign of respect and recognition of the host’s customs, in particular those regarding religion. Perhaps the host country believes their deep-rooted traditions should be followed by visitors, who after all, are only staying for a short period of time.

Often when tourists travel abroad, they behave disrespectfully towards their host country. They might drink too much alcohol or get into fights for example. They believe that they can act how they like when they are away from home. Instead of promoting their own cultural values they portray a bad image to the locals of a country.

On the other hand, others believe a host country should have a policy of tolerance and welcome visitors of all cultures. Visitors have plenty to offer a country in economic terms as well as introducing their own cultural identity. As such, guests should be received hospitably and with open arms.

Multi-culturalism and cultural tolerance is a sign of open-mindedness and acceptance. In my opinion, a host country should welcome all nationalities as long as they don’t abuse a country’s hospitality and overstep cultural boundaries.
